资源说明:Keeping up with the fast pace of surveillance and data collection is one of the main political challenges of our time. We are dealing here with a phenomenon that is so massive, that changes so quickly, and has become so ubiquitous, that it seems impossible to pin it down, not least through legal regulation. The law seems to run against the grain of social change and massive political pressures. This book, however, is an attempt to do just that. It is an impressive piece of work and exemplary in its pursuit of a clear and speci c issue – surveillance and big data – through many thematic perspectives that complement each other. While addressing a topic of great public importance, the analysis is conscien- tious and meticulous, yet ambitious and at times innovative. The book contains a rich set of ideas and concepts, and is well referenced to a substantial and diverse literature. The authors make good use of important conceptual devices to help us think more deeply about the problem of big data and automation of criminal justice and human life more generally. The editors are to be applauded for including a rich array of diverse topics, from automated and predictive policing, big data industry, arti cial intelligence, and many more. By drawing on such diverse sets of examples the book produces a much more complete view of big data than the usual particularistic studies that dominate the literature. In this way, the book disaggregates the seemingly plain initial dilemma between surveillance and privacy, and adds layers of complexity and contextualization. The book raises a number of interesting questions, and the analysis identi es a series of innovative tensions between, among other, free will and modern society, the value of privacy versus urban safety, the objectives of law enforcement versus individual rights. The rapidly changing relationships between humans and machines are radically transforming the nature of con- temporary criminal justice. It is worth taking note of the range of literature that is included, from legal and socio-legal perspectives to classical surveillance studies, urban studies and philosophy. However, unlike several other books in the eld, this diversity does not come at a cost in terms of cohesion. From a scholarly point of view, the work will be valuable for legal and social-legal scholars, sociologists and other social scientists, as well as students of political science and others generally interested in issues of surveillance.
