= Qdict * Author: Nick BookerQdict is a simple graphical program for querying dict servers. I decided to work on this because Fantasdic and Kdict have both been dropped from the repositories of newer Ubuntu releases, along with many of their dependencies; and I really can't be bothered to build all of said dependencies manually on each of my machines. I decided to use PyQt4 on the principle that shouldn't be disappearing from the package lists any time soon. == Features * Looks up definitions on the local machine Once it's got any more features worth talking about, I'll add them here. == Dependencies * Python (tested with 2.7, should work on 2.6, might on 2.5) * PyQt4 * The 'dictclient' module - available on Ubuntu in 'python-dictclient' package. == Direction I'm currently using the visual design of Fantasdic as the basis, but my main target audience is my mum who uses it to help her solve online crosswords, so I'll be tweaking it for her needs too. I do plan some sort of 'crossword helper' feature - how that will turn out I don't yet know - it may end up being just a simplified layer on top of 'regex' to allow specification of a complete word with unknown letters. Development will probably be quite slow - please be patient. == Showstopper issues This software isn't currently ready for the masses, because: * it has 'localhost' hard-coded as the dictionary server (so in order to use it you need to install 'dictd' and some dictionaries), * it only does 'define' operations at the moment (no matching), * it searches all available databases on the dict server (localhost) - unwanted ones can't be configured out.
